Songs (2013)
“Usually when an album is being created and when I was creating my first 2 albums, you usually try to pair songs together that seem to fit together as a certain theme or “concept”. With this record I decided to just choose the best songs I had no matter how incompatible with each other they were. At this stage I had a huge amount of songs piling up to be recorded such as “Fuckwit” which I had had since as far back as probably 2002. Going against the statement I just made, the songs “Fuckwit” and “Fuckhead” paired up together pretty well (at least lyrically).
The songs’ compatability with each other and cohesion surprised me. I was going for a polished Led Zep 4 or Physical Graffiti kind of soundscape.
I was still mesmerized by the 70’s at this point; musically, “Under Stars” is my “Tumbling DIce”, “The Rain” is “The Rain Song” and Bron”Y’Aur” in one. “Sonny” is Led Zep meets Nick Drake and “The Key” is WIllie Nelson and myself “rolled” into one”.
